Christelle Balt
Christelle Balt

I was responsible for the initial operation and maintenance of the Data Dissemination System (DDS) receiver component at UCT. I also coded the automated process necessary to extract full orbital track near-real time MERIS data from the DDS as it becomes available through the ESA, and process it further. The process involves the evaluation of incoming data for the level of coverage of the African coastal regions. Subset data are then appropriately created to accommodate coverage of the individual African regions of interest. These subsets and their metadata are subsequently made available for distribution as product files. I set up an archive where the data is automatically stored after processing.

Currently I am a student at the Graduate School of Oceanography of the University of Rhode Island, USA. I'm doing course work in marine hydrodynamics, ocean data analysis, physical oceanography, and climate change. As a research assistant I will be contributing to a study of atmospheric waves.

Lisl Robertson
Lisl Robertson

Lisl babysits the MERIS Data Dissemination System and makes sure it's not thrashing its satellite dish around or electrocuting itself. She spends a suspicious amount of time on the phone to Neil the dish guy.

In her free time she works on the validation of Southern Benguela buoy data with MODIS/MERIS. She also pretends to be doing an MSc on improving atmospheric correction techniques of ocean colour satellite data in the Southern Benguela, where traditional methods don't perform well.

In her really free time she loves travelling and scuba diving (preferably at the same time).

Marjolaine was responsible for creating this website. She is a physical oceanographer and has been involved doing consultancy work over the last few years. She is in the process of joining the CSIR as a member of the marine remote sensing team.

Christo Whittle
Christo P. Whittle

Christo ensures that the operational cogs of the MRSU stay well-oiled. He has strung together the bits of code which manage the near-real time processing of MODIS AQUA ocean colour data. Hardware and software maintenance occupy much of his time, although he would rather be playing with ocean data.

Meso and large scale marine physical processes fuel his scientific passion. In the pursuit of a PhD, he has a particular interest in investigating the physical processes driving the occurrence of a productive cold ridge on the Agulhas Bank using satellite and in situ data products.
